I think it’s just a matter of time before they have to shut it all down.

For sure. I mean they won’t cancel the season, but they have to for safety and sanity. We as a society refuse to do anything that we have to. I’m not saying I’m any better: I didn’t travel for 7 months, but now I leave town almost weekly because I was about to kill myself if I stayed home any longer. It’s a nightmare.

Contact sport can increase the likelihood of coming into... contact... with a novel virus?!

Have you found any situation while traveling where you felt you could be unsafe?

Nonsense. I’ve seen the people who only put on masks after they’ve played ball with their friends and only like 80% of them caught COVID.

The sport itself is probably more dangerous than the virus, especially for people in top physical condition. I think they’ll be fine

Literally every second. Everyone in the White House is tested daily, and they all still got it. There’s nothing I can do to be safe in public all over the country. But I own/work with restaurants so I’ve been exposed to entitled assholes every day anyway, might as well do things I enjoy too if everyone else is being unsafe and exposing me. The only way to be safe is to stay in isolation, which is not feasible for extended periods without a huge societal effort and sacrifice.

True, but what about their families and other team staff and anyone they may come into contact with? And even if players are likely to survive, will it cause long term affects and end/shorten already short and destructive careers? It’s not worth it for a silly game. No sport is worth spreading a pandemic because the risks can’t be controlled or limited to consenting parties. Just like no travel or dining experience is worth it either. It’s not going to stop us, but it’s crazy to think that it’s justified

Wear a mask like everyone else working a job in the entire world right now? Family would be tough, but it is a short season, and NFL contracts aren’t guaranteed.
No one offered to pay my bills when they shut everything down, and I’m sure NFL players are in the same boat.

Masks are helpful, for sure, but not perfect and they shouldn’t give us a free pass to do frivolous activities like take a vacation or play a full contact athletic game.
I’m sure no one offered to pay players bills, just like yours and mine. But that’s the issues. As a society we should have taken care of everyone’s needs and focused on a quick a decisive containment with no absurd economic BS thrown on top.
We should have all sat at home for March-May /June. With 110% of our normal pay, gaurantees of return to employment or extended unemployment, and a specified window to shop for groceries once a week with penalties for anyone found violating isolation. Huge societal effort and sacrifice but would have stopped this thing and kept us all whole. We just don’t have the will to pull together on anything. It would have been hard, but I did isolation for those months, and survived. Now I’m un -isolated but there’s more danger than when I went into isolation. We just accept that we’re likely to get sick and that killing grandma (by covid or isolation) is less important than “bootstrapping” or “fucking the poor” or “lying about having no options” or whatever the hell passes for “policy” these days.

I don’t think they need to shut it down, but I do think they are going to get bit hard by thinking they can just delay games by a day or two. They really should be just cancelling these games (or rescheduling for the bye week if they can rejigger schedules to make that happen) and having the players isolate for a week (and get tested every day or two during that period). Baseball was able to save its season by being flexible after some early screwups, and football can do the same, but they have to be willing to accept that it won’t be a normal year, and they’ll have to live with a scenario where every team won’t play 16 games.

I think they might have to go with something like a two-or-three- week pause. N one of this is that important that it can’t be delayed a bit.
